Gran Fondo Cambrils Park: the bicycle touring event that has it all
Next 28th and 29th of March, Cambrils Park Sport Village will host the 7th edition of the Gran Fondo Cambrils Park..
Is the bicycle touring event that has it all: pedalling, two routes with breath-taking landscapes, accommodation at a first-class Resort and activities for cyclists’ companions. Will you miss it?
This is how Gran Fondo Cambrils Park started.
“In October 2013 there was an event to present Cambrils Park Resort and its surrounding’s sporting potential to different actors from the tourist sector and the cycling world. Among them, there was Roberto Iglesias, Quebrantahuesos’ alma mater, which is the biggest and toughest bicycle touring event in Spain. He suggested that the area and the Resort were the perfect combination to organize a bicycle touring event. Thus, together, Cambrils Park Resort, Cycling Costa Daurada and Patronat de Turisme, took up the challenge and got to work to make it a reality.
And that is how on April 2014 Gran Fondo Cambrils Park was born with the participation of 900 people which has steadily grown to the record number of 2.500 cyclists.
Two routes. An Unforgettable experience. Cycling for everyone.
The 6th of April event offers two routes. One is longer than the other to offer different physical demand levels. This way all cyclist can give their best and enjoy the Gran Fondo Cambrils Park.
It is the longest Gran Fondo route, specially addressed to cyclists who have trained more. It goes around Montsant’s Natural Park, is 183 km long, has 3.000 meters high difference, goes thru 6 mountain passes and 21 villages. The sacrifice of this challenge is more than compensated by the beauty of the landscape.
This route is named after the municipality of Escaladei, God’s stairs in Latin. It can’t be anyplace with such a name! It is the origin of Priorat’s wine history and the region’s name.
This route is shorter, but its level of difficulty isn’t lower nor less beautiful as the Montsant route. It is 123 kilometers long, has 2.000 meters high difference, goes thru 4 mountain passes and crosses 20 towns.
Sunday guided bike-touring
If you still have energy on Sunday 29 you can put the icing on the weekend with a guided bike-touring route that will have assistance vehicles and will be organized by levels in groups of less than 25 people.
This is a novelty of this year whose objective is that the participants enjoy an outing without any competitive pressure and have the opportunity to socialize with other cycling enthusiasts.
The route on Sunday will allow you to know the interior of the Costa Daurada pedalling along roads and mountain passes that are totally different from those made in the previous day.
The groups will be divided by levels, depending on the average speed that the participants have accredited in their registration:
Group 1: 27-28 km / h
Group 2: 25-26 km / h
Group 3: 23-24 km / h
Group 4: 21-22 km / h
The departure will be made without chip or timing and it's important to remember that you should not take off the dorsal from your bike after Saturday's race. It will be mandatory to wear the dorsal of the previous day to identify yourself.
This is the Gran Fondo Cambrils Park official jersey design for 2020 that will be given to all participants.
Why should you participate in the Gran Fondo Cambrils Park?
Jaume Rué is clear about it: “Because Gran Fondo Cambrils Park is a distinct event. It doesn’t exist anything similar in Spain. To start, it is a two-day event. The bicycle touring event starts and finishes at the same Resort you are staying at, which makes the logistics easier. It is a first-class Resort almost in front of the sea. And, in addition, it is addressed to all family members: participants and their companions.”
